About Cleggan

Cleggan Fishing Village has a long history on this wild and rocky stretch of the Atlantic Coast. The first pier was built here in 1822 by acclaimed Scottish Engineer, Alexander Nimmo, but people had long been eking out a living from the sea and the shore in the traditional currachs and "pucán" sailing boats.

The rich herring fisheries were supplemented by kelp sales and lobster and crayfish exports to the continent and a market for basking shark oil. The terrible storm of 28th of October 1927 was a terrible blow to the village taking, as it did, most if not all of the able-bodied males from many houses but the way of life has continued. Many people still fish from currachs, though the inshore fleet has modernised over the years, and gather seaweed for sale or for use as fertiliser on their own land.

The herring fisheries are now a thing of the past and the basking sharks are no longer hunted but can often be seen off shore on fine Summer evenings. Shellfish are still a major export and you can watch from the bar on many evenings as they are bought and loaded.

The staple industries of fishing and farming are now heavily supplemented by tourism and the village offers a selection of friendly and welcoming B&B and self-catering accommodation. Cleggan is an ideal base for any holiday in Connemara with its rich archaelogical and historical interest, beautiful beaches and walks and wide choice of outdoor activities close at hand.

Many thanks to nature photographer, Heather Greer, for allowing us to include her wonderful photos on our website. For more information on this region with more of Heather's gorgeous photos, please go to aughruspeninsula.com
